If you're thinking about getting permanent jewellery, chances are you've asked yourself one very important question…
"Does permanent jewellery hurt?"
The short answer is no.
It's one of the most common questions we hear at Weld & Wore, and it's completely understandable. If you've never seen the process before, the idea of jewellery being welded while you're wearing it can sound a little intimidating. The reality, however, is much simpler, and much quicker, than most people expect.
Here's exactly what happens during a permanent jewellery appointment and why there's nothing to worry about.
How Does Permanent Jewellery Work?
Permanent jewellery is custom-fitted jewellery that is welded closed instead of using a traditional clasp. Once you've chosen your favourite chain and charms and we've measured it to fit your wrist, ankle, neck, or finger perfectly, the two ends of the chain are joined together with a small jump ring which is then welded closed using a micro welding machine.
The result is a seamless piece of jewellery designed to be worn every day.
At Weld & Wore, our permanent jewellery is available in 925 sterling silver and 14k gold filled, giving you beautiful, high-quality jewellery that's made to last.
So… Does It Hurt?
No - it doesn't hurt at all.
One of the biggest misconceptions about permanent jewellery is that the welding process happens on your skin. In reality, the weld is made only where the two tiny ends of the jump ring meet, not on your skin.
To keep you comfortable and protected, we also place a small protective leather patch between your skin and the chain while the weld is carried out.
The weld itself takes just a fraction of a second, and most customers are surprised by how quick and straightforward the whole process is.
In fact, one of the most common things we hear after an appointment is:
"Was that it?"
Is the Spark Dangerous?
Another question we're often asked is whether the spark from the welding machine is dangerous.
The answer is no.
The spark is very small and highly controlled. It's used purely to join the tiny jump ring that closes your jewellery, creating a secure and seamless finish.
Our team is fully trained in the welding process, ensuring every appointment is carried out safely and professionally.
How Long Does the Appointment Take?
The welding itself takes less than a second.
Most appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on how many pieces you're having fitted and whether you're personalising your jewellery with charms.
The majority of your appointment is actually spent enjoying the creative part- choosing your chain, finding the perfect fit, and deciding whether you'd like to add any charms.
What Does It Feel Like?
For most people, the answer is… nothing!
You won't feel the weld itself, and there's no heat against your skin thanks to the protective barrier placed underneath the chain.
Many customers tell us the experience is far less daunting than they imagined, and some are even surprised by how relaxing the appointment feels.
What If I'm Nervous?
It's completely normal to feel a little unsure before your first permanent jewellery appointment.
Our team takes time to explain every step of the process before we begin, answer any questions you may have, and make sure you're completely comfortable throughout your appointment.
There's never any rush, and we want the experience to be just as enjoyable as the jewellery itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can children have permanent jewellery?
We can weld ages 12 and above, we don't recommend any younger as children are still growing so they wouldn't get the full potential out of their jewellery. If they still want to be a part of the process we can add a clasp into their custom creation so they are able to remove it if it gets too tight.
Can I remove permanent jewellery if I need to?
Yes. Although it's designed to be worn continuously, your jewellery can be removed by cutting the small welded jump ring if required.
Can I wear permanent jewellery every day?
Absolutely. Our jewellery is designed for everyday wear using quality materials including 925 sterling silver and 14k gold filled.
